Pick your perfect mani
You never feel more together than when you have a fresh manicure right? Manis and nail trends are only getting more popular and with that comes new systems and techniques, promising long lasting and healthy nails. But what should you go for? We’re here to break it down so you always pick the perfect mani.
Shellac:
Shellac is a hybrid nail polish that combines gel and traditional nail polish. Shellac is known for its high-gloss finish and durability. It requires a base coat, colour coat, and top coat, each of which is cured under a UV or LED lamp.
Pro: It does not require extensive filing of the natural nail during the application process. This makes it a preferable option for individuals seeking to protect their natural nails while still enjoying long-lasting colour.
Staying power: 2 weeks
Con: If you do have weaker nails, shellac doesn't add any strength, therefore your nails are more likely to break and this has the shortest staying power.
BIAB (Builder in a Bottle):
BIAB, or Builder in a Bottle, is a revolutionary nail treatment that offers strength and flexibility. It is a type of soak-off gel that provides a more substantial enhancement than traditional gel polish but it’s not as thick and rigid as acrylic nails. BIAB is applied directly to the natural nail and can be used to create a thin extension or overlay for added strength.
Staying power: 3-4 weeks
Pro: The key advantage of BIAB is that it allows for natural nail growth while providing reinforcement against breakage. It also requires less filing than acrylic nails, preserving the integrity of the natural nail.
Con: BAIB uses LED curing which isn't the best for your nails and the curing process can lead to heat spiking which can actually hurt!
SNS (Signature Nail Systems):
SNS, or Signature Nail Systems, is a popular choice for those seeking a more natural and lightweight option for their nails. It involves dipping the nails into a pigmented powder several times, which is then sealed with a clear protective layer. The treatment is known for its breathability and flexibility, allowing the natural nails to grow without the risk of damage. SNS nails are less prone to chipping and can last up to three weeks, making them a durable and long-lasting option.
Staying power: up to 3 weeks
Pro: SNS doesn’t require UV or LED curing, making it a healthier alternative for your nails.
Con: it takes a 20 to 30 minute acetone soak to soften the hardened powder and remove SNS nails entirely. Why is it a worry? Acetone is a harsh chemical that can irritate your nail cuticle and dehydrate your nails, leaving them dry and brittle. Plus SNS take take multiple layers which could leave the nail thick.
Choosing the right type of nail care depends on you and your mani goals. Shellac is ideal for those who want a glossy and chip-resistant finish without damaging the natural nails, especially if you like switching up your shades. BIAB is perfect if you are looking for added strength and durability while allowing natural nail growth. SNS offers a lightweight and breathable option, promoting healthier nails without compromising on longevity.
Remember your nail technician and the products used will make all the difference. Find a nail technician you trust and stick with them. Regular maintenance, proper aftercare, and periodic breaks between applications are crucial for maintaining healthy and beautiful nails, regardless of the chosen method.
